Rage edition by Paul W Ryan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
It was an amazing trip to what happens inside a Leader's mind, you can even feel empathy for each one of the players. So good
An exciting and fast-paced debut novel by Paul W. Ryan, which could easily be adapted for the big screen.
Rage explores the emotion of anger, and how for some people it is essentially a drug. The protagonist, Peter Clayton, bands together a group of rage-filled misfits, from the unemployed to rich businessmen, and offers them an outlet for their pent-up anger playdates, where the "date" goes home with a few bruises, and a wad of cash, if he or she goes home at all.
The premise is great, and the execution is entertaining. Clayton is a "dealer" of this new (or, perhaps, ancient) form of drug, but he's as much a user as anyone else he works with. We gain more insight into his mind, and what circumstances led him down this path, as the story develops, and it quickly becomes clear that things can only get worse.
From the "modest" first playdate, where Clayton's psychotic friend Jason beats up a homeless man for 20 quid a pop, things start to spiral out of control, and the group begins to fall apart. Clayton isn't just organising rage hits -- he's making monsters.
Ryan describes the world Clayton lives in, presumably set in the US, with a deft hand. Clayton sees the city as a grim, depressing place, so it's not surprising he ends up turning his cynicism into something more sinister. Like any addict, Clayton and co always resort to anger and violence whenever things get out of hand, and this book could easily be an exploration of any kind of addiction.
Barring a few grammar and formatting issues, this was a quick and enjoyable read. The parts with the Survivors might have been a little unrealistic, but the ending is very satisfying.
Perhaps the highlight of this work, to me, was Clayton's diary entries, which are placed periodically between the chapters. These not only help us understand what motivates him; they analyse anger, exploring the psychological, and even religious, aspects of the emotion, how people try to rationalise and justify it, and how this typically unsavoury emotion is present within us all.
Expect plenty of violence and profanity, without which a story of this kind could never be told. The scenes are, at times, quite graphic, but I can't imagine any other way to tell a story about anger. For the characters going through so much psychological turmoil, the physical release is their most sought-after "high."
A grim, gritty, and entertaining tale, which reveals a promising new author.
